Checks and Balances

• Each branch is subject to “checks” from the other branches

• keeps one branch from becoming too powerful

• look at chart on p 58

• Direct clashes are rare but do happen

• veto, override, declare law unconstitutional,….

• Prevents the majority from having too much power
