With the British empire now expanding, and the fighting with Indians - England needed more money still
In 1765 the Stamp Act was passed requiring that every legal document, newspaper, certificate, deed, liquor license, etc have a stamp showing that a tax had been paid
Those disobeying were tried without a jury and almost always found guilty
The response of the colonists was to form secret societies known as Sons of Liberty - groups that burned any stamped paper they could find, tarred and feathered British officials.
