At the end of the war, England badly needed money - so they looked to the colonies. Britain’s debt was 20times higher than the colonies so they tried to increase taxes on imports/exports from the colonies
To avoid these taxes the colonists engaged in smuggling
In order to deal with this problem the English used writs of assistance- or search warrants that allowed officials to search for and confiscate any smuggled items - - after protesting the colonists were told that the right of the government to collect taxes was more important than the personal liberty of the colonists.
