  • The Catholic Catechism (1773) tells us the more we do good, the freer we are?


  • How is this true? Aren’t we free to do bad if wish?
  • Doing good (or evil) is a habit
  • The more we do it the easier it becomes

  • Can’t we say that if I think something is OK then it is OK for me?
  • Are there things that are always right? List


  • Are there acts that are always wrong? List
  • Are there some acts that are sometimes right and sometimes wrong? What ?

Conscience
  • What is a conscience?
  • CCC: Judgment of reason about the morality of some act
  • We all have a consience
  • Our conscience must be formed
  • Where do we learn right from wrong?

Conscience Formation
  • Know the principles of morality
  • Know and apply the teachings of the Church
  • Know how to apply our conscience in a given situation
  • Seek guidance from others
  • Seek reconciliation when needed
  • Pray for guidance

Types of Conscience
  • True conscience:  a properly formed conscience – knows right from wrong
  • Erroneous conscience:
  • Does not always know right from wrong – hasn’t learned- also called invincible ignorance
  • Vincible ignorance – when we make a wrong choice because we refused to learn right from wrong, or simply refused to accept the truth

Conscience
  • Doubtful conscience: when we are not sure of what decision to make
  • Here, we should do our best to discover the truth before acting
