What Jesus Taught
2
Teaching with Authority
  • In ancient times people would pose questions to rabbis (teachers)
  • In answering, the rabbi would quote other teachers and authoritative sources
  • Jesus also took questions
  • But did not use Scripture as an authority
  • He taught on His own authority
  • Also claimed the authority to forgive sins
3
Parables
  • Parable: A comparison story
  • Meant to make hearers curious
  • Use everyday experiences that the people would be familiar with

  • A common form of teaching for the Jews
  • Parables employ: comparison, symbolism, riddles, proverbs
4
The Kingdom of God is at hand
  • ‘Kingdom of God’ – used often in the Synoptic Gospels
  • What is it?
  • Where the values of God will reign
  • ‘Already but not yet’:
  • Jesus brings the Kingdom in His teaching
  • But the Gospels also tell of an end time event when history will come to an end

5
Letter vs. Spirit of Law
  • The law given to Moses was meant to control human sinfulness
  • It didn’t
  • The OT Prophets spoke of a new prophet who would bring a new law
  • Jesus
  • Sadducees and Pharisees follow the letter of the law and require others to do the same
  • Jesus says he is the fulfillment of the Law
  • Has come to fulfill it not abolish it
6
Law
  • Tells people they must “keep the Commandments”
  • Sums up the law in one great commandment “Love your neighbor as yourself”
  • Spirit of the law is what will save us, not obligation
