Old and New Testament
  • When Christians refer to the Old Testament they are speaking of the first part of the Bible
  • The New Testament tells of the ministry of Jesus Christ
  • Today we often refer to the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Scriptures
  • They are basically the same as the Old and New Testament, but take into account the Jewish faith

The books
  • Catholics include 46 books in the Old Testament; 27 in the new Testament
    • This makes up the canon of Scripture; the accepted list of books

The Books
  • Early Christians and Jews differed on the Books to be included
  • Catholics include 7 books (1, 2 Macabees, Judith, Tobit, Baruch, Sirach, Wisdom) not recognized by Jews as part of the canon of scripture
  • These were written after 300 bce in Greek
    • Called deutercanonical; second canon

The Books
  • During the Reformation, Martin Luther decided that only those books recognized in the Hebrew Bible should be included
    • Most protestant bibles do not include these books – but often include them in a section called the apocrypha  ; which means “hidden”

When was it written?
  • The Hebrew Scriptures were written between 1000 BCE and 150 BCE
  • They were written in the Hebrew language
