- Also called extreme unction – unction means anointing – so it was the
anointing of those in extreme danger of dying
- Also called the Last Rites
- If the person is dying this would be the last rite they would receive
from the Church
- No longer just for those who are dying
- Anyone who is ill or has reached old age may be anointed
- Sacrament may be repeated if the person continues to be sick or get
better and then gets sick again ….

- The Sacrament is one of the 7 Sacraments of the Church
- Instituted by Christ – Jesus often heals the sick in the Gospel and has
a great concern for them – often touched those whom he heals
- The Sacrament is also outlined in the Letter of James 5:14-16

- Administered by a priest
- The proper matter is olive oil or some other plant oil
- The oil has been blessed by the Bishop at the Chrism Mass – usually on
Holy Thursday – may be another day
- When necessary, the priest may bless this oil before celebrating the
Sacrament
- The person to be anointed is anointed on the forehead and the palm of
the hand – though other areas may be anointed when necessary

- The sick
- Before surgery
- Sick children who have reached the age of reason (but the sacrament is
not generally denied when requested)
- Can be given to those who have lost consciousness or the use of reason
- Can only be given to the living
- The dead have no more need of the Sacraments
